Dress Like You Mean Business

What you wear to a job interview, whether in person or on the phone, tells the interviewer everything before you say a word. Here are the wardrobe staples that will get you the job.

Dress Like You Mean Business

You are already qualified. You already have the experience. You already know your stuff.

So why does the woman in the mirror not look the part?

That is the question I hear from women every single week. Senior executives. Business owners. Women who are a 9/10 on the confidence scale in their workplace, but a 4 or 5 the moment they step outside that comfort zone.

What I wore got me in the door. I learned that early. And I have spent nearly 40 years proving it is not vanity. It is strategy.

This post is about dressing like you mean business. Not dressing younger. Not dressing trendy. Dressing with intention, with authority, and with the woman you actually are fully on display.

Does What You Wear Really Affect Your Income and Influence?

Yes. Full stop. This is not opinion. This is science.

Investing in your wardrobe is not fun fashion money. It is a powerful investment into your personal well-being and your professional success.

Tony Robbins talks about how when you change your physical state, you then change your emotional and your mental state, not the other way around. And one of the easiest ways to change your mental and emotional state is by changing your outfit.

Enclothed Cognition, Adam and Galinsky back in 2012, is all out there. The research is real. The results are real. What you wear impacts your money, your mood, your marriage. Everything.

We live in a world that recruits and rewards confidence and excellence. When you walk into a room well-dressed, instantly, without saying a word, you are communicating that you are confident, that you have a spirit of excellence, and that there is discipline about you. People pay good money for that.

They want to recruit you. They want to buy from you. They want to partner with you. They want to marry you.

Dressing like you mean business is not about impressing anyone. It is about connecting with the woman you are called to be and making sure the outside matches the inside.

What Are the Non-Negotiable Wardrobe Staples Every Professional Woman Needs?

You do not need a full closet overhaul. You need foundations. Build those right, and everything else flows.

When it comes to building a beautiful closet customized to your budget, your body, and your lifestyle, it is like building a house. You have to have foundations. These are foundations.

Here is where I start with every client inside my coaching program:

**The Blazer.** A navy blazer is most versatile to begin with, and once you gain confidence with wearing it, you can invest in a powerful black blazer, a beautiful ivory or white version, or how about a ruby red wool blazer for the royalty in you?

Google a picture of the gorgeous, late Lady Diana, and you will find many pictures of her in jeans and blazer. It is a quintessential ensemble for anyone wanting to communicate quality and class, elegance and style.

**The Pantsuit.** You have to have a pantsuit. It does not matter what you do. It does not matter if you are a nurse. It does not matter if you are a doctor. It does not matter if you are a teacher, if you are a stay-at-home mom. You need a pantsuit. Because it gives you multiple items to wear for different occasions.

**Nude Heels.** You have to have a pair of nude heels in your closet, any type, any style. They lengthen. They polish. They do the work before you say a word.

**The Camisole.** A camisole is just what you wear underneath. Start with white, start with black, start with navy, and then move on to a floral version, a red, a green. Then you play.

**A Quality Belt.** A good leather belt can take you from casual to smart casual to business casual to quite a business formal. She has got the red lipstick on and she is good to go. It sharpens you up. It is a tailored look and it is going to position her with confidence.

These are not shopping tips. These are the foundations of a system. The LindaPaige Capsule Wardrobe is a list of 30 essential, versatile items that mix and match easily to create multiple different outfits.

How Do I Build Outfits That Actually Work for Business?

Stop thinking in outfits. Start thinking in color-ways and flow.

One of my favorite working combinations: brown blazer on with a gold necklace and a nice crisp white tee or white collar shirt with some camel pants is a beautiful, very classy business casual look.

For a sharper, more formal moment: your white collar suit, nude or tan heels, a nice thin belt tucked in nicely to your bootleg, and you can put a necklace on for a business casual look.

A blue blazer with a white tee and bootleg jeans, plus a nice brown belt. Remember, blue and brown go nicely together. Better than blue and black. You can do blue and black, but blue and brown are nicer together.

And the blazer over a dress: what you can do with a blazer over a dress is button it up and put a thin or broad belt around the outside to really cinch it in nicely.

One rule I teach in every coaching session: think color-way, not matchy-matchy. Think flow over balance in outfit construction. You are not a sandwich.

How Do I Dress for My Body Shape After 45?

You just have to know your body. When you know your body, you can dress it right.

I work with five body shapes inside my program. K8. Dynamite. Bootyfull. Warrior. All Heart. Every shape has a dressing logic. Every shape has a brilliance to highlight.

If you want to be taken seriously, you need to learn to dress on the outside in a way that reflects the woman on the inside. That means shape, not size. I am not here to make you smaller. I am here to make you visible.

If you have very broad shoulders, you want to avoid wide or boat neck tops or dresses. You want to wear square neck. You want to wear V-neck. Tiny adjustments. Enormous impact.

Posture and body language are a big part of your personal style. The same outfit, two different postures. Two completely different women. Your nonverbal must line up with your verbal. That is not optional.

And for anyone asking whether you should dress up for a phone interview, the answer is yes. Why would you dress differently? The same you shows up either way. Dress for that woman, because what you wear changes how you think, how you speak, and how you show up. Every single time.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Questions women ask about this

What should a professional woman over 45 wear to look confident at work?

Start with a capsule wardrobe built on 30 essential, versatile items that mix and match to create multiple outfits. A navy or charcoal suit, a well-fitted blazer, and a quality leather belt will carry you from business casual to formal without a wardrobe crisis. When you walk into a room, you want to communicate your top strengths, your approachability, your confidence, your value, and that directly impacts your income and your influence.

How do I dress professionally without looking outdated or frumpy?

Style is just a skill, and the first rule is this: dress current, not trendy. A suit does not have to be old-fashioned down-to-your-ankles pants. Suits come in the most incredible, fun, modern styles today, and you can do so much with a blazer. Focus on fit, shape, and one statement piece, a bold necklace, a Konplott earring, a red lip, and you shift from invisible to influential instantly.

What is the 80/20 rule for getting dressed in the morning?

The 80/20 system means that 20 percent of your effort each morning produces 80 percent of your result all day. Build your capsule wardrobe correctly once, and every morning decision becomes a 5-minute pull-and-go, not a 45-minute panic. Your closet cannot represent yesterday. It has to be a step ahead of you, ready for you to step into it and be the woman you want to be that day, that month, that year.

Does what I wear actually affect how much money I make?

Yes, and the science backs it up. Investing in your wardrobe is not fun fashion money. It is a powerful investment into your personal well-being and your professional success. Tony Robbins teaches that when you change your physical state, you change your emotional and mental state, not the other way around. One of the easiest ways to change your mental and emotional state is by changing your outfit.

How do I dress for a business casual meeting when I want to look sharp but not overdressed?

A white collared suit with nude or tan heels and a nice thin belt tucked in neatly gives you a sharper, smarter look, and you can add a necklace for a polished business casual finish. One quality leather belt can take you from casual to smart casual to business formal. Add red lipstick for a formal meeting or interview and you sharpen the whole look. It positions you with confidence. The goal
