How to Dress an Apple Body Shape Over 45 (All Heart Shape Guide)
Dressing an apple body shape over 45 is simpler than you think. This is your All Heart style playbook: elongate, balance, and own the room.
How to Dress an All Heart Body Shape Over 45 (The Shape Guide Nobody Is Telling You About)
You have been dressing around your middle for years. Covering up. Layering down. Hoping nobody notices.
I see you. And I want you to stop.
Because the All Heart shape, what the fashion industry calls the "apple," is one of the most elegant silhouettes I work with. You have incredible legs. Gorgeous shoulders. A defined upper body that can carry statement pieces like nobody else in the room.
The problem is not your body. The problem is that nobody taught you how to dress it.
I renamed the body shapes in my teaching for a reason. I renamed all the body shapes because, for goodness sake, how do you make an apple feel sexy? How do you make a pear feel sexy? So we do not do "apple" here. We do All Heart. Because that is what you are.
Now let me show you how to dress her.
What Is the All Heart Body Shape, and Do I Have It?
The All Heart shape carries weight through the midsection and tends to have narrower hips and full, beautiful legs. Your shoulders and bust are often strong and defined. Your waist is less defined than your upper or lower body.
If you look in the mirror and think "I'm all in the middle," you are probably All Heart. If jeans fit your hips but gap at the waist, or dresses pull across your tummy before they fit anywhere else, that is your body giving you information. Not a verdict. Information.

Why Hiding Your Middle Is Making Things Worse
I am going to tell you the truth your best friend has not said out loud.
Wearing big, boxy, shapeless clothes to hide your middle is not hiding anything. When you wear things that cover up the parts you are not confident about, you actually make them look bigger. Especially if it is warm and you are wearing something that is covering you all the time, it just draws attention to the part you are trying to hide.
It is not about hiding the part that you do not really love. It is about highlighting your best bits.
For the All Heart woman, your best bits are extraordinary. Your legs. Your shoulders. Your décolletage. Your calves. These are the assets I want us to put in the spotlight. When we do that, the middle simply stops being the main story.
This is what I call fashion math. Fashion math is all about using lines and angles to tell the eye where to go. You are not hiding. You are redirecting.
What Necklines and Tops Work Best for the All Heart Shape?
V-necks. Every time.
A V-neckline is the single most powerful tool in your wardrobe if you are All Heart. It creates a vertical line through the center of your body, elongating your torso visually and drawing the eye down and through, rather than across. That is fashion math in action.
Strong collars work beautifully too. You want to emphasize your shoulders, your waist, and your calves. A strong collar is going to create some emphasis here.
Add an empire waist where you can. The empire cuts just below the bust, at your narrowest point, and then flows over the midsection. It skims. It does not cling. That distinction matters enormously.
What to avoid: wide, boxy horizontal hems that sit right across your tummy. A horizontal line across the widest part of your body is never your friend. Sometimes by drawing a horizontal flat line across your hips or midsection, you are doing the opposite of what you intend.
What Bottoms Should the All Heart Shape Wear?
Show. Your. Legs.
This is where All Heart women leave the most style currency on the table. You have legs, and the fashion industry has convinced you to cover them up. I disagree.
Shape, not size. Emphasize shoulders, waist, thighs, and calves. Rock those legs.
Bootleg jeans are one of your three non-negotiables. A proper bootleg flares under the knee. Check your length. Wear with heels, a blazer, and a cami. Or wear with sneakers, a tee, and a crossbody bag. Medium or dark denim is best.
A-line skirts that fall to the knee or just below are another powerful option. They skim the midsection, flare gently over the hips, and celebrate your legs. Pair with a structured top or a fitted V-neck and you are commanding every room you walk into.
The bodycon dress is not off the table either. I know. Stay with me. I really believe you cannot say to someone you cannot wear that, because beauty is subjective, style is subjective. If you love it and you feel powerful in it, we find a way to make it work for your shape.
How Do Structured Jackets and Blazers Help the All Heart Shape?
A good blazer is your best friend. Full stop.
The key word is structured. Not oversized. Not boxy. Structured. A blazer that skims your frame, hits at the hip, and has a defined shoulder creates instant shape and authority. What you can do with a blazer over a dress is you can also button up the blazer and put a thin or broad belt around the outside to really cinch it in nicely.
That belt placement matters. Wear the belt higher. Pull it up to just below your bust line, at your empire waist, and you have created a waist where you thought you had none.
The cropped jacket is another tool. Your height will help you choose the right cropped jacket. If you are shorter or taller than average, do a search online for cropped jackets for short or tall women. Do the research. Invest in the right one. It will earn its place in your wardrobe a hundred times over.

What Is the Monochromatic Trick, and Why Does It Work for All Heart Women?
One color, head to toe. That is the trick.
When you wear the same color family from shoulder to shoe, you create an unbroken vertical line. The eye travels up and down your body, not across it. You look longer. You look leaner. You look put-together without trying.
Rather go for bold block colors, solid colors. Navy head to toe. Camel head to toe. Rich burgundy head to toe. Add your statement earrings, your Konplott piece, your red lip, and now you are not someone blending into the background. You are the woman people remember.
This does not mean boring. The 80/20 system: 20 percent of effort each morning produces 80 percent of the result all day. A monochromatic base is your 80 percent. Your jewelry, your shoe, your bag? That is your 20 percent. Get both right and you are done in minutes.
What Are the Three Non-Negotiable Items Every All Heart Woman Needs?
I give my clients specifics. Not vague lists. Here are your three.
First, quality bootleg jeans in medium or dark denim. Wear with heels, a blazer, and a cami. Or wear with sneakers, a tee, and a crossbody bag. They work for everything from a school run to a speaking stage.
Second, a V-neck structured blazer in a neutral. Navy, black, or camel. You want a taupe, you want a white, you want a black or a navy, and this just makes traveling and errand running and day-to-day wear really easy. Build outward from these.
Third, a statement earring. Something that is nice and a little bit thicker and not too thin so that it gets lost. This is your signature. When you elongate your neck with a V-neck and then frame your face with a strong earring, you have created a focal point. The eye goes where you send it.
In your closet, have tops, pants, dresses and skirts, jackets and coats, shoes, bags, and accessories. Those seven categories just make it very, very simple for you.
These are not just wardrobe pieces. They are the beginning of your capsule. To understand how the full 30-piece capsule wardrobe system works and why it transforms your mornings, your confidence, and your bank account, read my guide on building your capsule wardrobe after 45.
How Does Confidence Connect to the Way I Dress My All Heart Shape?
Here is what I know after nearly 40 years of working with women across 45 countries.
The way you dress is not vanity. It is strategy. Knowing how to dress your body according to your body shape, not according to your weight, is a very important part of your confidence. It is not about size.
You do not have to lose weight to look good. Confidence is sexy, and it is built upon the rock of your self-esteem.
This is the 4-Pillar Confidence Framework I teach inside every program: Faith, Fashion, Food, and Fitness. Fashion is Pillar Two. Not because it is the most important, but because it is the most immediate. You can change what you wear today. Right now. And when you do, something shifts.
The science backs this up. Adam and Galinsky's 2012 research on enclothed cognition showed that what we wear changes how we think, feel, and perform. That is not a style tip. That is biology.
One client told me: "I was that pear shaped woman who wanted to be comfortable and hid behind baggy clothes and a handful of excuses. I came to Linda for style advice but I got so much more. I learned from her that beauty is an inside job, and that loving myself meant loving all my curves. She taught me that I am not a pear, I am Harriet, fearfully and wonderfully made."
You are not an apple. You are not a shape.
You are a woman of substance. And it is time your wardrobe said so.

Questions women ask about this
How to Dress an Apple Body Shape Over 45 (All Heart Shape Guide)
Dressing your body is about shape, not size or weight. For the All Heart shape, the goal is visual length: a V-neck top, a structured jacket that skims the torso, and straight or bootleg trousers create a clean, elongated line from shoulder to hem. The All Heart shape typically has the best legs of all the five shapes, so show them, that is your secret weapon.
What should a woman with an apple body shape wear to look slimmer over 45?
You can wear crew neck or V-neck with a blazer, but for the All Heart shape, a V-neck is the stronger choice because it draws the eye downward and creates the visual length the torso needs. Avoid high, boxy necklines that cut across the widest part of your frame. One V-neck in black, one in white, and one in your signature color covers 80 percent of your outfits.
What neckline is most flattering for an apple body shape?
It is not about hiding. Nobody is thinking about what is underneath. What people see are your shoulders, and a floaty layer over the midsection paired with a fitted or structured piece underneath gives you what I call the "floaty skinny": floaty on top, skinny at the bottom. Instead of focusing on hiding the tummy, highlight other bits, specifically your legs, your décolletage, and your shoulders.
How do I dress my apple shape when I have a tummy I want to minimize?
The minute you add some kick or flare at the bottom, you match your shoulder width with the hem of the trouser, and that stops the All Heart shape from creating a pin-drop effect straight down to the feet. Wide-leg and bootleg styles both work well for the All Heart shape for exactly this reason. Yoga-style pants with a wide or kick-flare cut in black, grey, and multiple colours are practical, travel-friendly, and genuinely flattering for this shape.
Can an apple body shape wear wide-leg pants after 45?
A capsule wardrobe is a 10-step recipe built around 30 essential, versatile items that mix and match easily to create multiple different outfits. For the All Heart shape specifically, those 30 pieces should prioritise V-necks, structured cropped jackets, monochromatic color-ways for visual length, and straight or bootleg trousers over skinny cuts. The seven core categories are
